OSI to help share WordPress’ success as a model for other open source projects.
Oct. 6, 2014 – PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Open Source Initiative ® (OSI), the premiere organization that promotes and protects open source, announced today that the WordPress Foundation (WordPress) has joined the OSI as an Affiliate Member. The WordPress Foundation’s mission, to democratize publishing through open source, has elevated WordPress to not only a globally recognized content management tool, but a vibrant community encompassing the ideals of open source software development, and advocacy for the adherence to the Open Source Definition. Its affiliation with OSI helps enhance and sustain the open software development community, while ensuring that millions of individuals, organizations and businesses can cost-effectively communicate online using a robust set of content management capabilities.
“We are excited to be joining the OSI as an affiliate member,” said Jen Mylo, speaking on behalf of the WordPress project. “We are big believers in collaboration, and we look forward to the opportunity to work with like-minded projects to further the goals of the open source movement.”
“We are thrilled to have the WordPress Foundation join our community. WordPress, with over 10 years of innovation in not just publishing—but with the web itself, is an iconic organization and community, universally recognized as a superior publishing platform and its wide-spread use,” said Patrick Masson, General Manager of the OSI. “WordPress is so often cited as one of the great examples of open source success—we hope to help share that success with others.”
The WordPress Foundation ensures free access, in perpetuity, to a variety of software projects, creating a stable platform for web publishing for generations to come. As part of this mission, the Foundation protects the WordPress, WordCamp, and related trademarks to educate the public about WordPress and related open source software. One of the most important activities of the OSI is as a standards body, maintaining the Open Source Definition for the good of the community. The Open Source Initiative Approved License trademark and program creates a nexus of trust around which developers, users, corporations and governments can organize open source cooperation.
