Announcing first Africa Open Source Fellowship in memory of Guido Sohne

Launched on the eve of his birthday, the Free Software and Open Source Foundation for Africa (FOSSFA) and the Advanced Information Technology Institute of the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Center for Excellence in ICT (AITI-KACE), have decided to join forces with the Sohne family to establish a Fellowship in memory and honour of the great work that Guido accomplished. So I was not worried to make the 15-hour road trip to get to Accra to be part of the event.

First the press conference, then the get-together in the evening.

This Fellowship, I believe, will not only help Africa fish out all the hidden Guidos, but also given them the needed recognition. I am happy that such initiatives can begin, and hope that they will continue and increase. As controversial and straight-speaking as Guido was, none could deny he had a vision for his continent and was well aware of the role that he had to play to make this vision become a reality.

Africa has Guidos. Africa needs Guidos. Africa also needs to recognize the Guidos among us. Then, the global open source community shall be reminded to add them to the world open source map. Here is then, a call to all the youth in Africa, to register and prove yourself!
